  • Whenever you move out of a room, remember to switch off the lights and other machines
  • Use the washing machine only when you have a full load of clothes
  • Put off the AC half an hour before you leave the room
  • Try shading your AC unit from the bright sun as it can use up to 5 per cent more energy when exposed to direct sunlight
  • Use fluorescent light bulbs as they use 75 per cent less energy than incandescent bulbs
  • Vacuum the coils of your refrigerator every few months. It will help lower your electricity bill and also keep the condenser working better
  • Operate automatic dishwashers and washing machines only when they are fully loaded
  • Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator or by using the defrost setting in your microwave
  • Install water softening systems only when necessary.

Tips on How to Save Water:

  • Verify that your home is leak-free. Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water was used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there are hidden leaks.
  • Check for toilet tank leaks by adding food colouring to the tank. If the toilet is leaking, the colour will disappear within 30 minutes. Check the toilet for worn out, corroded or bent parts. Most replacement parts are inexpensive, readily available and easily installed. (Flush as soon as test is done, since food colorings may stain your tank)
  • Install a toilet dam or put a filled bottle in the tank to reduce the water flow during each flush
  • Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily
  • Install dual flush type cisterns
  • Take shorter showers. Replace shower head with an ultra-low-flow version. Some units are available that allow you to cut off the flow without adjusting the water temperature knobs
